Conditions

What are stretch marks?

Stretch marks are a type of scar that appear as indented streaks on areas such as the abdomen, breasts, hips, thighs or buttocks. They form when the skin is stretched too quickly and the deeper layers are unable to adapt, resulting in damage to collagen and elastin fibres.

What causes stretchmarks?

Stretch marks commonly occur due to:

  • Puberty growth spurts
    • Pregnancy
    • Rapid weight gain or weight loss
    • Rapid muscle development (e.g., weight training)

Any sudden stretching or shrinking of the skin can disrupt the structural support network, causing visible scarring.

Do stretch marks change over time?

Yes. When stretch marks first develop, they are often red, purple, pink or brown depending on skin tone. They may feel slightly raised or itchy. Over time, they fade to a pale, silvery tone and become more indented as the damaged tissue matures.

Treating stretch marks early—while they still have colour—is usually more effective.

What Are My Treatment Options For Stretch Mark Reduction?

How to Improve Stretch Marks**

At Skin Architect, we provide non-surgical treatments proven to improve stretch marks by stimulating collagen and elastin production. During your free consultation, our therapist will assess the area and explain the level of improvement you can expect.

Our stretch mark treatments include:

  • Microneedling for Stretch Marks –Microneedling using a medical-grade device creates controlled micro-channels in the skin. This triggers the body’s natural healing process and encourages the formation of new collagen and elastin. Over time, this helps to smooth, firm and improve the texture and colour of stretch marks.
  • Microneedling RF (Radiofrequency) for Stretch Marks – Microneedling RF combines traditional microneedling with targeted radiofrequency energy delivered into the deeper layers of the skin. This enhances collagen stimulation and can produce more dramatic improvements in texture, depth and firmness, making it ideal for more stubborn or older stretch marks.

When Is the Best Time to Treat Stretch Marks?

The best results are achieved when stretch marks are treated early—while they are still red or purple. Mature, silver-coloured stretch marks can still be improved, but may require more sessions for optimal results.

Commonly Asked Questions

Stretch mark reduction treatments are available at our Bradford clinic.

The treated stretch marks do not return; however, new stretch marks can form if the skin undergoes further rapid stretching. Maintaining a stable weight and good skin hydration can help.
